Honoring the Bond, a Quality-of-Life Conversation

Clients considering Hospice/Palliative Care services won’t be able to schedule a doctor consult until after the new year.

This is a one-hour, virtual appointment with our Hospice Nurse to assist you in navigating the challenges of caring for your pet. Changes in your pet’s health can be overwhelming whether it is associated with normal aging, terminal disease, chronic pain, cognitive decline, or any combination of these. You may be experiencing an array of feelings as you notice changes in your pet’s current quality of life and begin to face the reality of their mortality.

Our goal is to evaluate your pet’s current quality of life and determine if there is potential to improve upon it. We will: listen to your concerns, help define your goals; and outline the available options.

Our discussion will also include end of life planning regardless of how close or far away that may be. We will discuss natural death vs. humane euthanasia and help you determine which of those fit into your idea of a peaceful farewell that truly honors the bond between you and your pet. Knowing what is possible and how to proceed, when the time comes, will ease some of the burden during an already emotional and difficult process.

Finally, we will discuss how Crossroads can directly help you achieve your goals and support your pet, as well as options for continuing care independently or with the assistance of your current veterinarian. Completing this conversation with our team is the first step towards a Palliative Care/Senior Consult or a Hospice Consult.

Hospice Consult

Hospice care begins with the Honoring the Bond Conversation with our nursing team to determine if hospice is appropriate for you, your family, and your pet. Hospice is for patients seeking comfort care without a curative direction. If hospice is the next step for your pet than we will arrange an in-home exam and consultation with Dr. Ellen to establish a doctor patient relationship. We work with you to examine ways to identify, monitor for, and address potential pain. We will also make life easier for both you and your pet by giving you tools to help manage your pet’s care as their needs change as they approach their final days. Dr. Ellen will develop a medical plan that specifically addresses the needs of your pet for their continued comfort.

The fee includes the initial Honoring the Bond Conversation, the in-person exam/consult with Dr. Ellen, and one month of follow-up communication while we adjust and monitor your pet’s response to treatment.

Estimates will be provided for any other services, diagnostics, or medications.
Continued monthly care and monitoring is $265/month and includes a telemedicine visit with our medical team, lasting up to 60 minutes.

Palliative Care/Senior Pet Consult

Palliative care begins with the Honoring the Bond Conversation with our nursing team to determine if palliative care is appropriate for you, your family, and your pet. This visit is ideal for pets who could use some extra support but who are not in the hospice phase of life. Palliative care is for those pets struggling with arthritis, cognitive decline, or have been recently diagnosed with a disease that you find challenging to manage while on a curative path.

If palliative care is the next step for your pet, we will arrange an in-home exam and consultation with Dr. Ellen to establish a doctor patient relationship. We work with you to examine ways to identify, monitor for, and address potential pain. We will also make life easier for both you and your pet by giving you tools to help manage your pet’s care as their needs change with the aging process and/or their disease progression.

During the initial appointment, the doctor will assess your pet, potentially run blood work to assess overall health, and then develop a plan to keep them comfortable and as active as they can be. We will work closely with you over a month to adjust treatment and medications to best benefit your pet. An estimate will be provided for any other services, diagnostics, or medications.

The fee includes the initial Honoring the Bond Conversation and one month of Palliative Care.

Continued monthly care and monitoring is $265/month and includes a telemedicine visit with our medical team, lasting up to 60 minutes.

In Home Humane Euthanasia

$450

Humane euthanasia can be performed in the comfort and privacy of your home. Our goal is to make this as comfortable and peaceful as we can for you and your pet. The fee includes the home visit, a clay paw print, for those that would like one, and transportation to Faithful Companion if a communal or private cremation is selected.

The Honoring the Bond Conversation is not required for humane euthanasia however is a separate fee if elected to help determine if humane euthanasia is right for you, your family, and your pet.

Communal Cremation

$195

We will transport your pet to Faithful Companion for cremation services after the euthanasia visit. Your pet’s ashes will be respectfully buried at Whispering Pines Pet Cemetery in Ypsilanti, MI.

Crossroads can provide a complimentary pawprint at the time of the visit.

*Crossroads only facilitates aftercare arrangements/transportation for patients that we have euthanized. If you are seeking aftercare arrangements only, including an option for a home pick-up, please contact Faithful Companion directly at 284-435-7500.

Private Cremation

$380

Cremation services are respectfully provided by Faithful Companion. Your pet will be transported to the crematorium after the euthanasia visit. Or, families wishing for more time after the visit, we can also arrange for a member of the Faithful Companion team to come to pick up your pet when you are ready. You pet’s ashes will be returned to you at your home within 2-3 business days after your home visit.

Ashes are returned in a wooden urn and a clay paw prepared by Faithful Companion’s artistic team, for those that would like one, at no additional cost.

Additional remembrance items

A variety of urns and other remembrance items are available from Faithful Companion for either communal or private cremations for additional fees. Please visit Faithful Companion’s website or contact them directly for more information.

Additional Fees

$55-$165
There may be an additional fee of $55-$110 for visits, depending on your location. Please call for more information.

Holiday visits are an additional $165 and are only available for current palliative/hospice care patients.

Cancellation Policy:

Crossroads is aware of how difficult making the decision to euthanize a pet can be and we wholeheartedly support clientele when/if they change their mind about end-of-life decisions. When at all possible, Crossroads asks for at least 24 hours’ notice when cancelling an appointment so that we are available to service other families. Crossroads reserves the right to charge a non-refundable deposit of $125.00 before rescheduling a previously cancelled appointment. If the appointment occurs, the $125.00 will be applied to the total balance. If the appointment is cancelled, the deposit will be kept by Crossroads, even if the patient passes away before the doctor arrives.

Please Note:
